slop in the trolley gear, laser 4000

I can grab my arch and wiggle it back and forth (arch rotate index axes). This indicates a worn key or gear box (I think). It's been so long since I replaced one, I don't remember how it comes apart. The 1" pipe is attached to the straight swivel, then passes through the arch index cam, then through the gear box, then the arch impact spring and cam, then attaches to the overhead arch.

Refresh me as to how to dismantle this so I can inspect where my slop is.

Pull the motor off the side of the gear box. Remove swivel. remove the spray arm and manifold. remove the lift block and impact switch cam and spring.
remove 4 3/8" bolts that mount the gearbox to trolley. remove hollow tube and gearbox as an assembly. remove hollow tube from the top side of gear box.( push from bottom)

It sounds very easy, but if any water has frozen in the hollow tube, you will never get it out without damaging it.

All sounds kind of familiar.

What would be causing the loose feeling or slop? Is there a key inside there? Because of the looseness it misses X16 sometimes when the arch goes to "home", giving me an arch index failure.

There is a key that holds the hollow tube in the shaft, as well as a key that holds the motor in the gear box. When you say you have play, and can move the spray arm back and forth, does the hollow tube move as well? If so, I would be suspect of the gearbox itself. You really shouldn't be able to move the internals of the gearbox from the output side.

I see everything spin about 1/4" all the way to the swivel. That seems like a lot of play to me and shouldn't be there.

Try moving the spray arm back and forth in a clockwise, and then a counter-clockwise movement. If you can get the spray arm to gradually work past the starting point,(starting at home, and ending up at a different starting position), it is time for a new gearbox.
