For those who use MicroCoin QL in their self service bays & just have 24 VAC available ... do you need to have a 24 VAC to 12 VDC interface or do you get by without it??? I seems like it would take up valuable space within the coin box.

I am assuming that if both Parker & IDX fit on the box with the coin mech to the far right facing the box from the front (the most common position) the MicroCoin QL will fit without any issues.

We have used a MicroCoin QL in our laundromat with our custom Internet Kiosk since the year 2000. So we have one already but I do not believe it has the proper conformal coating for car wash conditions & we have its native 12 VDC going to it. So I may need to get a bit educated by some operators who already have these in their bays. Thanks

You don't need anything else, just hook it up. It will fit where an IDX currently resides.

Could you translate the last paragraph into english?

I.B.,

Thanks for answering.... anybody else have any input?

About the last paragraph, I agree "conformal" is kind of a big word. It means a waterproofing process that may not have been added or used on my MicroCoin QL made for a "dry inside environment" like inside our laundromat. Maybe "waterproofing" was too strong of a word. Made more "water resistant" possibly is better!

While the QL is a 12VDC device, for the CW industry they are equipped with an “interface” on the ribbon cable for 24VAC operation. Unlike the old MicroCoin S5 the QL’s interface is quite small and easily fits in the meter box.

For most timers simply connect the Black and a Blue wire to 24 VAC
Connect the Yellow wire to the Neutral
Connect the Green wire to the timer coin pulse.

For Dixmor Timers connect Black wire to 24 VAC
Connect Yellow and a Blue wire to Neutral
Connect the Green wire to the timer coin pulse

I have QLs in bays, vacuums and vendors. They’ve been so reliable, I’m almost shocked when one jams…usually due to rejected coins or tokens blocking the coin return path.

Why would you even consider modifying and using a 12VDC non-insulated vending model of a coin acceptor for a car wash bay when there's a car wash specific model available?

Cantbreak80,

I am assuming that the ribbon cable comes with the basic car wash QL version without any additional part.

Do you find that you need the heaters with thermostats to keep the MicroCoin QL not as wet? It appears that we made the mistake of not putting in the thermostatically controlled heaters in our bays with the IDXs. I read that the Parker SB3s are sealed pretty good so I am wondering if they are less vulnerable to moisture than the IDXs? Since the SecureCoins (iCoin) are made in Canada you would think they would be also possibly sealed???

Anybody willing to share their experience possibly of an improvement with whatever coin mech used ... with the thermostatically controlled heaters???

Understand, the conditions with a car wash with both overhead doors needed to be shut often during the winter time vs a milder climate such as in Texas ... the need for the thermostatically controlled heater may be greater.

Mep & others,

Since I am very familiar with the Microcoin QL in a dry area ... I was hoping to hear from someone familiar with both versions of the coin mech & who noticed all the differences between the two QL versions. To make it more clear, there is no way that I would consider the less waterproof version out in our bays under the ... more dense humidity conditions of a both doors shut low temperature car wash bay. I just wanted to firm up the differences between the two QL versions. I notice that KleenRite has this interface available which I am not sure what the need for it is ... if the special ribbon comes standard with the basic car wash QL. http://www.kleen-ritecorp.com/p-28413-val-board-for-microcoin-ql-acceptor.aspx

Well…I haven’t purchased any QLs in the past 7 or 8 years but mine have the interface as a permanent part of the ribbon cable. Maybe the new ones are a plug-in affair as shown on your link. Regardless, they seem to be similarly sized.

A benefit of having a plug-in interface would be…in the unlikely event that you’d need to remove the acceptor from the faceplate, simply unplug the acceptor from the interface instead of disconnecting the individual wires?

My meter boxes are not equipped with heaters. They are 2ft from the end of the bay walls, on the south side of the building (no doors). They still get wet from overspray.

Maybe I’m lucky that customers don’t regularly drench the boxes? Maybe the timers put out enough heat to keep them from icing?
