I am considering changing my star combination safe heads for keyed ones. I am getting too old to lay down, turn sideways, try to focus my glasses, to open these things. I really don't understand why they put these da*n things just a few inches off the ground when they built this place.

In any case I have 2 questions.

Does any one know what the used combination heads are worth.
Has there been any problems with the new plug lock ones

The only real problem with the keyed ones are usually from people tampering and breaking stuff off in them, but it sounds like yours are not easy to access. Otherwise, try to keep the "V" in the plug lock from being at the bottom when it's locked. They can build up crud and rust and will sometimes jam locked into the safe.

What your old ones are worth really depends on the condition. They're not real expensive new.

FWIW, to cut down on mischief I had a square piece of steel welded to the head to accomodate a hockey puck lock over the pug lock and a circle of steel that encircles the hockey puck lock with about 1/16 inch of clearance. This stops people from jamming stuff in the plug lock and would slow down the motivated crook at least a little.

Are Star vault heads worth anything? Not really, only what you can get for them.

Has there been any problems with the new plug lock ones. We have vault heads with Medeco plug locks that are over 25 years old. I had to rebuild them, replaced the internals about 3 years ago. We’ve never had a problem with people putting things into the lock. The new Stainless steel heads from KR have a tab for a hockey puck type lock. https://www.kleen-ritecorp.com/p-2203-high-security-safeheads.aspx

They usually put a shroud around the puck lock to keep someone from twisting it off with a pipe wrench, but it seems unnecessary on a Star safe head that would just spin if you tried that.

Mine protrude slightly from the wall and I could see some numb nuts attacking with a sledge. Ra Lock has a square cover and Coleman uses a similar if not identical one. Since it completely covers the top of the Hocky puck it would also slowdown drilling attempts. I could see using the same or similar cover but sized for the round head.
