Complete overhaul kit IR 2340 5HP 2 Stage Cast Iron.

Our 12 year old Ingersoll Rand 23405L 5HP 2 stage Cast Iron air compressor has developed a louder than usual clanging type of noise. I took the motor to the local motor repair shop & it appears to not be anything broken or bad bearing etc in the motor. I did get a quote on a 3 phase motor for about $325 to replace the single phase motor since we are set up to hook up either single or 3 phase.

Does anybody have success stories or failures to share when it comes to using a complete overhaul kit in a similar air compressor?

I had to replace the bearing on the pulley side of the pump. same model #. Initially it looks easy!! Ha Ha. Pretty much had to take the whole pump apart and get the sleeve pressed off to get to the bearing, Its a $10 part and its common. Took a few hours but its been about 2 years and good to go. I have since added a second compressor in another room and set the drop in pressures about 15 lbs different. Only runs one compressor unless the unit drops out then backup will come on.

It makes sense that that specific bearing would take the worst brunt of a lot of use. Was the extra sound a kind of clanging sound? I wonder if anybody knows if the connecting rods would produce a rough clanging sound. The bearings on our commercial washers make more of a hollow more freight trainish type of sound.

It should be easy to tell if its that bearing. The belt will squeal at startup, you wont be able to keep the belt tight and you can take a prybar and if there is any movement in the pulley its that bearing. Unless you run that thing dry, they are pretty durable machines. Its easy to take everything apart getting the bearing off is a bear!!! I didnt buy any parts or gaskets except the bearing!! I used a high temp gasket sealer and the things been great.

Just get a replacement pump at Tractor Supply Co.

Thanks for helping for us to get a better sense of the IR2340 Pump clanging noise & for sharing the fact that if we did take the pump apart to examine we probably could use "Right Stuff" gasket sealer so we would not need the expensive gasket kit.

It does appear that I need to wear the dunce hat for a short time ... since it turns out putting the right tension on the belt took care of the clanging noise!!! I am just happy that it seems to be back to normal. We have been real fussy about using IR's recommended Synthetic Oil properly so that could help pump wise. Our backup portable PowerMate 200PSI oilless compressor is OK for short term use & for wheeling around with our Plasma Cutter but beyond that the decibel level is excruciating!

Mike thats how it started for ours!! We had to keep tightening the belt. Then it got to the point the compressor was dancing around the equip. room!!
