$15 minimum wage?!!

I feel like fast food places have been preparing for the minimum wage hike for years. Five years ago I could go to my favorite burger place and get for about $13 what now costs $22. Most of the increase has been in the last two years. The last time I went to Taco Bell, dinner for three cost $39, which ten years ago would have been under $15.

I think Eric hit it square on the head. I have read the constitution and simply can not find any provision that allows the feds to dictate this to all states. But that's just the Don Quixote in me.

What chaps me is going to a restaurant now, and when the bill comes, there are pre-made tip suggestions. Around here, the suggestions are 20%, 22% and 25%.

Why the eff should I tip a waiter 25% when they are already making at least $15 per hour?

Here the waitstaff minimum is $4.95 but with tips must equal $13.50. If the wage and tips do NOT equal $13.50 the business must increase the minimum base rate.
Years ago my friends that waited tables did not have to claim/report their tips. The restaurant would just give them a paycheck for the $2.25 hourly rate. It was a good way to avoid paying taxes and quality for financial aid for college and qualify for social programs. The government FINALLY caught on and made the restaurant make the waitstaff claim tips as income. I remember them all complaining about it. My issue was that they were all making more money with the inclusion of tips than I was making as a mechanic.

Just heard a radio report about the city of Long Beach, CA. The eminently wise city council decided to have all what they call essential workers, get a $$ an hour raise. Fine and dandy, except Kroger who has several store in the city, decided they can't do this. So they closed two of their stores. Now hundreds of workers are out of a job, the the citizens have much less access to food. Remember, the government is smarter than you and me, and they just want to help.

It's so tone-deaf of the government to consider this during a pandemic. It's all to get the yokels excited. The yokels don't realize this pandemic is hastening automation as it is. A $15 minimum wage will accelerate that further.

Those areas minimum wage is roughly $7.75---$8.50.
How the hel are those areas supposed to DOUBLE minimum wage?!!

this is a video discussing the impact of the $15 national minimum wage. It is a little long at just under 15 minutes but it is worth taking a look. important information at about the 1 minute mark is: average wage in MA is $31.58 while the average is Miss is $19.27. Over a $12 difference!!

I only hope this will be the wake up call for our industry to raise our prices accordingly.
A cup of coffee cost more than most self service washes.
This is just the start for higher taxation on everything probably raising the retirement age, etc. too.
With the trillions of dollars being spent now. This country is in Big Time trouble.
Every possible way the government can raise money to pay down debt will be used.
I only hope this will be the wake up call for our industry to raise our price’s accordingly.
No matter what type of wash you have buying the property, building the building, buying and installing the equipment, hiring employees, etc. it cost A LOT of money.
Then if your a S.S. wash you price it anywhere from $1.50 to 3.00.
If it’s a tunnel the start price is around $5-$9. Then you have Monthly programs. All this after spending millions of dollars.
Again I only hope this will be the wake up call our industry needs to raise the prices accordingly.

I tend to agree...our National Debt is gonna be the USA's downfall. If that doesn't, then the Democrats will. Just arrived in Santa Fe NM, & their Democratic Governor has DESTROYED this State. Schools NEVER reopened from last Feb!!! No restaurants, tourism, skiing, etc. Gotta quarantine for half a month upon entering NM!!

People don't carry cash as much anymore. How are you guys helping your staff get better tips from customers?

We added a tip line to the CC receipt given in our detail shop. Some ignore it, while others tip the employees.

I think the only staff left in our industry that is receiving tips are the full-service employees that finish off the vehicles, and the detailers.

Tips had been problematic at my express wash because the peppers would "scrub for dollars" and this greatly slowed our throughput. They basically were running their own little side-hustle out of my tunnel. When I installed pay stations and auto-roller up function, that basically eliminated the prepping for dollars issue.

Waxman, need your advice please, as I'm new to this forum. My company has an easy solution to tipping for service businesses. But I don't want to use your forum to spam. What is an appropriate way to share this information? Thanks, E
