2-way radio advice

For those of you that use 2-way radios at your location for employee communication, which one do you recommend?

We have been using the Motorola CLS1410 for about 6 months. Prior to these we were using consumer grade 2 way radios. They were always breaking and very unreliable.

The commercial grade radios are much more durable. We also are using earpieces now which work well. So far we are happy with the CLS1410.

You can get the ones that have MURS frequencies. They are hard to find but those four channels are license free and have a decent range. You can also have a base station, but the maximum output is two watts and maximum antenna height is 60'. still it is not uncommon to get one mile hand held to hand held, and five miles or better with hand held or mobile to base station. They can be used legally by anyone for personal or business use. Other commercial channels, including GMRS frequencies, require an FCC license.

We have a VHF Motorola Repeater- that is located at a local TV tower.
We have vertex mobiles at every wash, with the changer alarms hooked to them. We also have vertex portables. With our own license it gives us a clear channel radius of 30-40 miles. Most of the radios including handhelds are almost 10yrs old.
