it's time to go to five dollars to start. I'll keep the time per coin the same I think but it will be about five minutes 20 sec worth of time.

My automatic pricing is sky high, so a three dollar start for the self serve seems too low in comparison. I doubt I will get too much pushback from the customers but there are always a few who will complain.

We have been at a start of $5 for 4 minutes since opening our wand bay a few years ago. Our only "competition" was/is charging $1 a minute but they are always having mechanical or chemical issues and don't take care of their customers. At first we had a few customers balk and tell me they could wash on the other end of town for less. I just told them I didn't intend to be the cheapest, I wanted to be known as the best and if they had any issues with my wash please let me know so I could fix it! Seems to have worked and we have a very loyal following.

We pay for water & sewer about 3 cents per gallon (probably about 2.65cents). At 4 GPM that 5 minutes could compute to 20 gallons or 60 cents for the 5 minutes. Then you have all the other operating expenses - before you know it you are paying people to wash their cars at your place. Even your new pricing (45c/min) does not leave much profit.

I think customers do care about start time pricing to some extent, but if you have lots of options, presoak, triple foam, tire cleaner , blowers spot free, foaming brushes etc. they see that there are easily enough options to fill that time with whatever they may need to get a clean, shiny and dry car.
