In 16 months I have replaced 6 of 10 motors in our vacuums. Is this normal. We use JE Adams vacs. Any cheaper replacement possibilities?

What brand/model motor is failing? Are they all the same age and just happen to be wearing out at the same pace?

Lamb motors from JE Adams. One year warranty and right about 14 months started to fail. No rhyme or reason. Been replacing with 492 Windtrax motors and they appear to be working well. Just seems one year is not a lot out of these.

Adams uses the low-end Lamb motors. I'm not surprised they don't last.

I really like the Domel 492 - it's stronger and quieter and worth the extra cost.

The brushes are replaceable, so it could be they wore out. They do need to be checked so they can be replaced, otherwise the motor burns out.

Brushes should be checked at least once per year. Mine generally last around a year. When I check them if the brushes are over half gone I just put new ones in. At a couple of bucks each it is cheap preventitive maint. I also use a sharpie to write the date the brushes are changed on each vac motor.

Our J.E Adams Combo vac’s use a Lamb 116336-01 motor. We replace the brush’s VA30034 $1.77 every year if they need it or not, it’s cheap insurance. They usually need to be replaced after a year of heavy use. I’ve got a couple of Electrolux vac motors in a vac that I’ve been testing now for 3 years. They haven’t missed a lick yet. They are a pretty quiet motor.

we have been running our Adams vacs now for 4 years and didn't have a problem with the motors  Can this be?

Of course it can. Yours may get less use than carnut2's; yours might have a different motor; his could have undersized wiring. There are all sorts of variables.
