Bill,
I haven't been to Panama but did go to Belize last month. If I had enough stuff I would be tempted to sell all of that stuff and move there. We really really liked it.

If you do go to Panama be sure to go throught the Panama Canal if you haven't done that before. It is truly amazing.

I remember flying to Honduras in the late 1990s. We stopped over in Belize. I remember a strange sight. There were several hundred people just standing on the rooftop, watching planes take off and land.

We went to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. You fly into Belize City and take a puddle jumper over to the island. There is plenty of third world in Belize but not in San Pedro. Lots of really good restuarants and very friendly people who speak English. If you like to snorkle or dive the second largest barrier reef in the world is less than 1/2 mile off shore. The phone book in the condo was for the entire country and was about 1 1/2 inches thick. Most of the places are "condotels" and instead of cars you rent golf carts to get around. We went in early December and it was not crowded at all but my guess would be that it is now. Trip Advisor has a forum about San Pedro that is pretty good. It was certainly not the cheapest place that we've been but I really loved it.

Check out my post about the Panama 10 Cent coin, works exactly like a quarter in Multirons. Don't bring any back to the states.

For those talking about Belize, I have been their numerous times and my cousin owns a 7500 acre ranch right near the Belizian Zoo on the main and basically paved road through the country. Ranch is called Tiger Sandy Bay and National Geographic Magazine filmed a Juguar special on the ranch about 20 years ago.
Belize is the only english speaking country in Central America. Gained it's independence from Great Britian in early 1980's. GB still acts as their Secretary of State and some troops go on manuevers in Belize. There is a great bar just past my cousin's ranch where many signs for English military units are hung on the wall.
It has the second largest barrier reef in the world. Amberis Caye is the largest and most developed island. It was nice 20 years ago but I find it to crowded with lots of traffic and large resorts. Really nice beaches. I prefer Caye Cauker which only has sand streets and no automobiles, everyone gets around in golf carts. However the beaches are not that nice. Placencia which is along the coast in the south is a penninsula that is being developed and really nice. Fairly laid back with a range of hotels and small bungalo type of places.
A secondary trip is to St Ignatius area up in the hills towards Quatemala. Lots of bed and breakfast type of places with neat bungalos for rent. Many things to do like exploring caves with Myan artifacts. We took a canoe ride back about a mile into a cave. Also swimming in rivers, etc. Francis Ford Coppola has two resorts, one in hills and another near Placencia.
I consider Belize one the best places to visit in Central America. The zoo near my cousin is actually part of the jungle where they have created containment areas for the animals.
