I recently purchased a brand new Normally Open 453P solenoid for a weep system. I noticed the valve doesn't shut clear off when energized. Thinking maybe it had dirt in it I opened it up and noticed a small hole in the piston which makes me wonder if it is suppose to leak. Is this hole suppose to cool the valve or something while the valve is energized for long periods of time or something? I am tring to decide to send it back or if it is suppose to leak?

The hole allows inlet water to fill the chamber above the piston which forces the piston down against the valve seat.
I've not experienced good reliability with the O453P in low pressure applications. It's a high pressure valve requiring a 10psi min inlet pressure.
A better choice for weep systems would be the 1/2" Dema O474P diaphragm valve, requiring only 1psi inlet pressure to maintain closure.

Do yourself a favor and send the DEMA O453P back to whoever you bought it from, you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration and you’ll thank me in the end. The valve you want to use is an ASCO 8210-G34 normally open valve, KR#SA216. The problem with the DEMA 0453P N.O valve is they will hang up in the closed position and everything will freeze, been there and done that. We’ve been using the ASCO 8210-G34 valves for over 25 years. Also put a ball valve in front of the solenoid valve so you can shut off the water in the summer or if you have to do any maintenance on the weep system. I’ve bought a few ASCO 8210-G34 valves on EBay, there are a few on there now.
Listen to Randy...I took his advice over (2) years ago....Ditched the Dema that was causing freeze-ups and went with the Asco 8210-G34...Its been flawless....Its not a cheap valve, but well worth it!

I second that- Demas NO solenoids suck. Asco or GC solenoids will work fine for years with no problems.

Ditto on the Dema valves. I used them on my fresh water and reclaim tanks. I fought and replaced those valves multiple times before switching to GC and have not had to touch either one of them in over five years.

Great. Both of my washes have the Deva 474 NO valves for week. If they give me trouble I will just replace them. One replaced a GC Valve that was only one year old before going bad, so we'll see how it goes.
