Can you not repair it? I've worked on a couple of mine. They are pretty simple. Who's going to know that you put a kit in it?
Just one of the three kits is $250, the whole unit is $550. I'd rather just replace it, especially since neither of its ball valves nor the main valve next to it shut off completely.. In fact now that I think about it, it'd be cheaper to buy a new one and put all the parts in the old one and recycle the bronze.

Is 8 lbs per CuFt the most efficient now? How many grains capacity per CuFt does that yield?

I was taught 6 lbs per CuFt was best efficiency .
Yeah, I used 6lbs for years with Bruner softeners. However, as time goes by I've found capacity reductions resulting in hardness leakage. I decided to quit picking nits and just go with 8 lbs.

I maintain a school's Softeners that has 2 of them and I just rebuilt the controls.Love working on the old stuff cause nobody really knows how.
