A favorite pet peeve of mine: when people leave the selector on an hp function with time left on meter. Wand is holstered and spraying away. I hate this! What a waste. Solution: follow them home. Go into their bathroom. Turn sink on full blast. Leave shower on full blast. Exit the home.

Less indictable solution: be there to turn it off or be watching cameras remotely and have automation installed such that you can turn them off from your phone.

There's a guy here who gives double time after $5 is deposited. He put a loop sensor in the floor so when the car moves it kills any remaining time. It's both to keep customers from leaving the pump running and to stop people from trying to wash multiple cars on one startup.

People coming to our self serve washes that spray wet paint, drain oil, spray grease deposits. This is a federal violation and they act dumb founded when i cut the bay off or let them know. These idiots think its normal WTF. Had one lad yesterday about to spray a full bed out of white paints that spilled in her truck bed and i cut the bay off and walked over and told her she can not do that at a carwash it is a federal crime.. Her reply was what am i supposed to do.....i said use a water hose or something but you will not be doing that here. CANT FIX STUPID but it seems 95% of the customers are completely clueless.

I hate the "What am I supposed to do?" crap. You're supposed to use common sense, not break the law, at minimum use Google to find out how to deal with it. People who have asked me that over the years were spraying paint out of their bed or back of SUV, pouring oil in the pit, had backed up to the dumpster, one idiot wanted to vacuum spilled gasoline out of his trunk. One lady called me an a$$hole because the county landfill charges to take her 20 bags of trash and I wouldn't let her use our dumpster for free. Then it was "Fine, I'll put them in the garbage cans." She had already called me an a$$hole so I said "No, you'll get the f*** off this property and never come back."

It's amazing how people feel like you owe them free dumping. I have a question for you more experienced car wash owners and operators. I have videos with license plates of people leaving full trash bags in my bay, others urinating in my bays and then throwing trash in it without spending a penny and some loitering for an hour and then leaving trash and a used condom in the bay before leaving. I also caught some guy washing oily equipment in my bay. Would you guys go to law enforcement? Or, would you just clean it up and get over it?

I know what I will do, but I would like to know what you guys/gals do.

Some depends on local law enforcement. If they have time to go after someone dumping trash, I'd have them do it. If you can't show any lewd act on your cameras, they probably can't do anything. You want to be careful about reporting oil in your drains - I remember someone getting shut down and it costing him something like $30,000 in fees and cleanup costs, and his only option to recoup it was to sue the guy who dumped, and he had no money.

No signs yet, and even when they can read they pretend they didn't see them. And the guy who wanted to vacuum gasoline out of his trunk practically ran over my pushbroom as I was sweeping to ask me, then sat there on top of my pile of dirt griping that he didn't know how to clean it up without a vacuum. And there is a notice on the vacuum about not picking up flammables or hazardous stuff, but he wouldn't have seen or read it anyway.

Im with you on this. I am retired military (US ARMY) and just seeing how these people treat stuff in unreal. I wanna make a sign that says "TAKE CARE OF YOUR EQUIPMENT" i dont use it. Also these are the same ones that come back saying something didnt work or they want a refund. The refund people i tell you sure used it till your time ran out so NO. Caught people peeing in bays and my first reaction to them is what the f*** are you doing?? And so you dont go to a grocery store parking lot and do that what makes you think its ok to do here, i work here and i dont want to be stepping in that. O i could go on and on. Signs dont matter they are either to ignorant and cant read, to blind, or just use it as a cigarette put outter or something they let their bad azz kids just bend up.
Post the videos and pics on your site and put up a big sign. Not to stop them. To shame them. So many people in a town will watch to see if they know anyone being bad.

We had one out IBA prep brushes stolen last night. We posted pictures we took from our video and put it on our Facebook page and his own page.. Took about 8 hours before we had people identifying the perp. An hour later we got a message from the guy saying it was a accident. The spray wand in the bay must have caught it and flipped it into his pickup he said. The guy knows we have video of the whole thing and yet he still tries to cover himself with more lies. Video shows placing it in his pickup.

Has anyone ever considered getting rid of the trash cans???? I am thinking about it but am too close to selling so I don't want to make waves for a new owner.
There is a thread of a guy who removed his dumpster - go check it out. He's really happy.

I’m amazed at how fast someone can put a dollar to start the bay and rinse their car off and finish up. When I wash my own vehicle I’m there for like 30 min and costs me like 15$. These people are some speed washers these days I guess.

My NEW pet peeve is when a customer walks up to me in the pump room, holding a bucket and asks me to fill it with water so he can hand-wash his car! I've owned my SS car wash for 18 years now, and it's happening more often. I tell them they can fill their bucket in the wash bay. It's $3 to start, for 5 minutes. Although they can see the hose and faucet behind me, I ignore it, and escort them to the wash bay to show them how the high-pressure RINSE cycle works! ;)

I lock the door behind me when I am in the pump room. You might consider that.
My pump room is VERY SMALL, and shaped like an L. If I'm out of sight, I lock the door for safety. Most of the time, I'm outside the pump room, cleaning / sweeping / emptying the garbage / talking with customers / making change / pulling weeds / doing small maintenance. I prefer to be on-site when it's busy, so I can quickly manage traffic flows, discourage bucket washers, answer customer's questions. I designed happy signs that discourage "hand-washing, hand-drying and hand-waxing while customers are waiting" and have them posted in each bay. It's very helpful on a busy Saturday. All I have to do is point out the sign, and encourage them *nicely* to hurry up. I remind them that I'm open 24 hours, and they can come back during the week, or another time when no one is waiting. I always "thank them" for their cooperation, then walk away and don't give them an audience in case they protest. I try to make it a win-win and accommodate everyone. I don't want to be strict and tell people ABSOLUTELY no bucket washing. I use only gentle hogs-hair brushes. Some customers bucket-wash because their vehicle has been scratched by using another wash's nylon brushes. By talking to them, I'm able to teach them about my soft brushes. I treat all my customers with respect, with boundaries, and I feel they treat me and my car wash with the same respect. I know that others are watching to see and hear how I handle these awkward situations. I have learned "to catch more flies with honey than vinegar!" It's paying off nicely for me. My car wash is busier than ever, it's the nicest one within 15 miles, and I have happy customers!! :)
