I found this patent drawing online. I actually saw one of these washes in operation in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I'm not sure how widespread these machines were, but the one I saw was in Northern PA.

I saw one operate in Minnesota, probably around 1980. (Hope that doesn't date me too much.) It was cool to watch. An operator got in a phone booth type enclosure on the gantry and controlled the brush operation against and around the car.

I don't remember the equipment, but I remember the name: It was the Bernardi Bros who built car wash equipment waaaay back! Remember "Robo" when they came out as an automatic spray car wash. The buyers raised so much cain that they sent them cloth to hang on the machine so there would be some friction.

My father had one back in the seventies. It ate a bunch of antenna's and a couple of car doors but it put me through college.
