If it after a fraction, like 3/8 MPE I would think it would be Male Pipe end and the MSE would be Male swivel end. the swivel is normally a non working swivel that simply allows you to thread to the fitting without having to be rotating the hose if you are not connecting to a swivel.

MPE and MSE are Kleen-Rite's abbreviation. Dan-Ark has it right, MPE is a rigid male NPT pipe thread, MSE is a male NPT that swivels for installation. Do not use those for your bay hose, the swivel will wear out very quickly.
