Cat 310 Oil Recommendation

What’s everyone use for the oil that goes in 3 holes on top of pump? Do you use the cat pump oil? I’ve seen 3 in 1 used as well. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Well it looks like I have a couple extra bottles of 3 in 1 to find a new use for. Glad I read this forum!

I have used NRP zoom oil for the last 30+ years with no issues.

FWIW I've been using this for a few years. It's basically the same as CAT oil, certainly meets all the same specs, and it's almost half the cost.

Following my mentor's instructions, I would always dip the wicks in Cat oil when installing new seal kits.
Years later, after reading that TBS, I quit doing that.
I also quit scolding operators for not adding 3 drops of oil every month.

I actually quit oiling them after they came out with the 5CP which uses the same low pressure seals as the 310 but doesn't have wicks or oiling holes. But when someone asks about oiling them, I just say what I did above because I'm tired of explaining and arguing against what it says on top of the pump. I quit trying 30 years ago when a guy asked me why his 310 oil seals kept blowing out and leaking, which was happening because 1) he FILLED the crankcase to the top because the sticker on the cap said to fill it, not to fill it to the proper level, and 2) he didn't take the sticker off the cap so the pressure from the oil expanding would blow the seals out. He never agreed that "fill with oil" didn't mean to literally fill it.

For the most part, any oil will help. We typically recommend our Cat Pump oil just because most people have it for the pumps anyway.

As far as if its required, generally it will help the life of the seals, should give you extended life. But if you don't oil that area, you get what I would call normal life.
