Cat 3535 leaking from valve plug

What would make our Cat 3535 leak water from a valve plug while running? It also was making a loud noise occasionally. My husband described it as a knock and I said it sounded like it had gravel in it. We have taken it apart and are going to replace all seals and valves. We were hoping to just find a broken valve spring, but there wasn't one. There were a few slightly worn out plastic spring retainers. We are also replacing the v-packing spacers and female adapters as they were in pretty rough shape. We just want to know if there is something else we should be looking at or fixing before we put it all back together and run it.

Also, the ceramic plungers don't want to come off. We had a hard time getting one off the last pump we rebuilt, but this is all three and they are being much more stubborn than the last pump.

Pinched o-ring and back up ring on valve plug. That will make it suck air as well, causing bad noises.
