You won't be able to just pull the pump to get the belts tight enough. You'll need some leverage. What usually works well is a crowbar on the bolt right behind the pulley - you can pull against the crankcase and the crowbar will keep the bolt from turning while you tighten it with the other hand. If you can't get that to work, look into getting some belt tensioners that mount under the motor.

Thank you everyone!! I went in this weekend and tried the crowbar trick (without hitting myself in head) and was up in running in minutes! Gave a gentleman that was nearby a free wash if he tightened the bolts why I pried and it WORKED!!! Thanks so much!

Hey, if it get the belt tightened in the most economical, best & most straightforward way ....:)

We use a piece of pipe and a block of wood. Very seldom do we ever have to mess with the belts.
