Compressor pump rebuild

My compressor pump locked up last night. I have to buy another one and it will be here tomorrow. Is it worth it to get the old one rebuilt? Where should I look to find someone to rebuild it? It's a Curtis.

Never heard of a Curtis.

I'm sure you could find someone to rebuild it, but if you can get the parts it's not that hard (i did it once) . Or you could order a new pump from northern tool, grainger, or somewhere on the web for cheap money.

I know Curtis compressors. They are descent equipment. I would suggest just replacing the pump. If you really want to repair the old one look for a local compressor repair service/company.

Back when I sold tires we had lots of compressors. The Curtis compressors we had were not very good compared to a quincy or ingersol rand. I would not bother fixing a curtis.

It's not hard to rebuild it, but for the time it will take, the parts and tools you'll need to buy, it's just not worth the trouble. You can get a good pump at Tractor Supply Co. for a decent price.

Don't have any experience with Curtis, But I would think twice about Tractor Supply cheap/good compressors. Thet carry the Ingersol brand, BUT the Ingersolbrand ain't what it used to be. If you do have to get an Ingersol, be sure to get a three phase motor variety, not the single phase motor. You would regret that, just as one of my customers did this last Sunday morning when the capacitor blew.

I ordered a new pump from the Curtis disty. He told me that he had replaced many of the compressors that my car wash disty installed. It was supposed to be the same pump but they told me it would be a different color. Well of course nothing was the same. I had to drill 3 of the 4 holes to bolt it on, the discharge was in a different place than the old one so the copper line that runs from the tank to the pump wouldn't fit. I plumbed it so I could use the copper line and the plumbing stuck out too far to use the bigger pulley that came with the new pump. Of course it is shoved against the wall in the 120 degree equipment room. What a pain in the a$$. It may drive me to drinking.

I guess my pump has been gradually going bad for a while. I can't believe how much quieter the new one is.

Curtis is a great compressor, It is the only brand I recommend because our local dist. is so good. He does give us options on which pump to use and I have had very little problems with either pump. I can only think of two isolated incidents both of which the dist handled with little or no cost to our customer. As Mac stated, IR is not what it used to be just like Speed Air is not what it used to be.
