I usually just shrug these things off.

I was washing down my ss car wash bay at 10:30am this morning. The car wash not very busy, the roads were still a little wet from the rain we had the past three days in a row. I had just finished and was walking to the back of the bay where the cars enter to go to the next bay over, when the guy comes in the wash from the street the wrong way, drives around the back, does a 180 degree turn, sees me, panics, and proceeds to ram into the end of the bay wall dead center. The only thing that stopped him was the wall itself. I would say he hit it, brakes locked, wheels turned, at about 10 - 15 mph. He then proceeds to back up like nothing had happened and looked at me standing about 5-7 feet away from the point of impact.

My first reaction was to get out of the way. :eek:My second was to call 911. I explained to the operator that someone just rammed into one of my bay walls, please send the police.

The damage to the wall was extremely minimal (a first for me), the front of his mud covered Jeep Cherokee had a push bar and an electric winch. Both were damaged
moderately.

The guy then proceeded to scream at me for calling the police over nothing.

The main reason I called was at the time I had no idea of the damage to my building, but more importantly, this guy needed a lesson in driving etiquette.

Once the police showed up, they asked me if I wanted to claim damage to my property at that time, I said no (there really wasn't any). They took my name phone number and address and will send me a police report if I want to go after the guy in the future for reckless driving on private property, and or, any damage that may arise from the hit itself.

Did I overreact?

I told the guy if he hit a person walking by, me, or one of my customers, he would be in a heap of trouble, feel really guilty, be fined, and have a lawsuit brought against his insurance company and my insurance company........

You did the right thing by calling the police and getting a report on the incident. Something might come up later reguarding damage to your building. The first thing that usually happens when you do not report this stuff is that the customer tries to turn it around and file a claim against you. This way you are covered.

Why did he panic when he saw you?

Actually, no.... He had so much mud on his SUV from mud bogging, I doubt he could see anything. He, at one point saw me, but I think it was after he hit the end of the wall.

His attitude was "hey I didn't hit anybody, and there was almost no damage to the wash, what's the big deal, why do you need to get the cops involved?"

I had this happen so many times before, and was not able to do anything about it, this was my chance to maybe send a message.

I think he was so ****ed off because he probably didn't have insurance, and I could see after I called 911, that the registration sticker on his Jeep's tag was missing.

To bad , so sad........

Hi MJC
Don't worry too much about him. Just tell him: "Standard procedure to call Police. Sorry! Next time drive more carefully." Another good idea is to take photos immediately. I just have a guy right now who wants to screw me but he can't because of the photos I took.

I agree get a cheap throw away camera, or a bunch of them, and put one in each of your cars and offices, etc. This stuff happens and since you have money, they suddenly are the victim. They are just a like a cell phone, don't leave home without one.

I was washing a bay once and a greyhound bus, using the wash to make a u-turn sideswiped my building and just kept going, I had to jump in my car and chase it down.

The driver immediately whipped out money, but I wonder how she explained 75% of the bus messed up, because he went hit a post before it bent and hit the building.

I can't even remember what life was like before there were cell phones with cameras in them. Now I make fun of people who have a cell phone camera without a built-in flash.
