Folks,

In the self serve side of my wash I dispense dollar coins. I like dollar coins and see the convenience in using them. However, I have a lot of people, who don't patronize my wash, come and take $40,$50...last Easter some one took over $400 out of one of my changers.

What do you do to deter this? Signs? Catch them and let them know it is only for CW customers? Just let em do it?

Advice would be helpful

Thanks!

I doubt if signs, catching, etc. will ever be effective. While I don’t have a serious “change only” issue, my location is near a Light Rail station. Their kiosks accept and dispense $1coins for overpayments.

With credit card sales continually on the rise, my annual “walkoff” of $1coins is down to about $38K. I suspect a small percentage of those coins end up in the transit system. Most of the surrounding retailers no longer take a second look when presented with $1 coins…a few offer them as change.

I’ve also witnessed many customers use their “console $1coins” so, some of the walkoff does appear to return. The rest, I just chalk up to doing my part to put them into circulation.

Yep. I too have this issue. But it was worse when I dispensed quarters. If I see I walk up change person heading to the changer, I'll turn off the unit while I'm there. My bank doesn't charge me to purchase dollar coins, and I now buy them in bulk bags (not wrapped) so it's not as big a deal to refill...I've never had an out if change issue.

I wish I had this problem! I wouldn't be complaining either!

I except up to a $20 bill in the changer. One of the best moves I've made at the wash. Haven't rolled coins since. For our wash, we're always ahead on coins. Never have had to buy any, so it works well. Paper bills are much easier to take to the bank...Walk-offs are welcome...At least they know there is a Carwash at the changer!

Another wash owner I helped had this problem with people who would come to his wash only to get change and a hell of alot of it, I switched him over to high security tokens reprogrammed all the equipment to accept tokens and quarters and immediately the people took notice he had some complaints at first but when he explained the reason behind the change (pun intended) some liked it some didn't, then the gas station down the street these people began to flock to told him a month later they are sick of all of these people coming in only for change and the wash owner's response "SO WAS I".

I'm interested why they come and buy so much $C, is there another business around that only takes $C? . I understand the wash who gives qtrs. and is also next to a Laundromat that the changers get depleted.

I dispense tokens and $C.

1 token = $1
2tokens & 3 $C = $5
A ten gets twice that of a five and a twenty gets four times a five.
I get some complaints about the $20 amounts so I tell them they can use a CC. Funny how many customers go ahead and get change for a $20.

My "customers" that come for the dollar coins say they collect them. I also have actual customers that will get 20$ worth of coins and save the rest, even when I offer to buy them back. I'm guessing they stock pile the coins for a rainy day fund. I always say your bank will have as many as you want, and they will even be rolled in $25!
