For 40 years the government has failed to get the public to use the dollar coin. It's a question of tastes. It's been a failure for any number of reasons that have been rehashed ad nauseum.

Trying to jamb it down our throats is like the tree huggers doing what they can to make auto traffic more difficult to force people to use alternate means of travel and kill the automobile.

If the Bureau of Engraving & Crane along with others were acting in good faith they would be trying for a uniquely American solution that would ramp up the $2 bill availability like I.B. Washin suggested. I prefer to listen to Mike Rogers of the House Intelligence committee & others who are privy to the ... extreme dangers of putting too many transactions within our nation on CyberSpace. Many people who had enough integrity to go along with their knowledge tried to warn about the derivatives etc ... just to not be listened to ... until too late for the 2008-2009 crisis ... that by the way ... really was not fixed ... unless you have a lot of confidence in quantitative easing & stimulus funding.

The opponents of the dollar coin ... mainly just have shallow excuses & much more inaccurate information than the pro dollar coin people. Aaron Klein who was & is in a position to know ... wrote the white paper & explained the "Systemic Issues" (with the proper detail) that has happened with the distribution of the dollar coins. Some of you guys can choose to ignore those key issues ... I & hopefully others will choose to not ignore them "for the sake of our country as a whole" The truth be known it was the one dollar bill that was shoved down our throats by a bunch of "deficit maker rascals" causing the loss of 10s of billions of dollars that will have to be & will be made up elsewhere!!! It is just a matter of whether the American People want to continue to allow those rascals to help ruin our country for future generations. Of course both the young & the old in the USA need to be properly informed with the better & more complete information that is based on fact & NOT shallow hyperbole like the dollar coin opponents presented at the House Hearing on Nov 29th, 2012.

Amen, Earl.

Mike, you are barking up a tree that has been chopped down.

Also, I don’t agree with your cyber-space analogy.

Derivatives are sophisticated version of insurance where cyber-space is a means to an end.

Derivatives caused harm not because of cyber-space but rather the practice was unregulated and greed - gambling with borrowed money based on opinion – like Ponzi.

Last week I treated the wife to a night out at the casino. I had a good night and cashed in several tickets which generated a handful of change. I tried to hand the change to my wife. She didn’t want it because it makes her purse too heavy.

I showed some of your coin diatribe to my 23 year old daughter.

In between sharing music with her boy friend by touching the cases of their smart phones together, she said you need to get with it.

And that affects the price of teain China how?

This is different than ignoring why people prefer to carry a few pieces of paper in a wallet as opposed to heavier coins in a pocket or purse or a 1000 of one versus the other on the way to the bank because....? The sake of our country? Really? This is one of the bigger issues we face? If only...

The truth be known it was the one dollar bill that was shoved down our throats..............................

That dog won't hunt. Alternatives have neen readily available for the dollar bill,. You propose eliminating alternatives for the coin.

Based on the last two reponses ... it is pretty obvious that some of us on this forum are not concerned about looking at the facts that the former Deputy Treasury Secretary & others have invested time to put forth to honestly help our country. They also do not appreciate the efforts made by the Citizens Against Government Waste & many others. They clearly do not see the value of having dollar coins as common as quarters ... with one third the weight per value.

Again, the link to the excellent & honestly presently White Paper is as follows: http://www.dollarcoinalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/TimeForChange.pdf

Who cares what some former administration puke may believe about dollar coins when over 26 million people, and growing, want mobile payment?

What about the 46 million 18 to 30 year olds? 80 percent or more of them pay with plastic, up from 60 percent in 2000.

Even older people are getting into the game – 40 percent of 61 years old and older pay with plastic, up from 20 percent in 2000.

These three cohorts alone account for over 100 million people. If you add in the others and exclude low income households, easily more than half the population uses plastic payment, up by over 20 percent since 2000.

As for low income households, 48 percent now use plastic payment, up from 29 percent in 2000.

Most of the time, life lessons are like riding a motorcycle – you quickly learn not to spit in the wind unless it happens to be over your shoulder.

Mike - You comapare apples to donuts. Weight of a Dollar coin to 4 quarters is meaningless. Carrying a dollar coin doesn't eliminate carrying 1,2, or 3 quarters. It only eliminates carrying a paper dollar. So, with a dollar coin weighing 8.1 grams versus about 1 gram for a paper dollar it has more than 8 times the weight per value. I wonder how that equates to extra fuel cost and environmental issues over time. Cosnspicuously absent from the "white paper" .

Based on your comments, it's equally obvious that:

1) You ignore the facts that oppose your view.
2) You're promoting dollar coins purely for your own benefit.

I say this because you also fight plastic payment just as vehemently when it's "pretty obvious" that it's what most people want.

I've been trying to stay out of this, but it all boils down to one question.

Is a dollar coin more convenient/efficient than a dollar bill?

Answer that question and we will know which one needs to go. All of this other jibber/jabber is a total different subject altogether.

Exactly & precisely. The only thing that I want to add is that some information is better quality & more thorough than others when it comes to convenience, efficiency & environmental. For example, I trust the thorough studies & methodology used for the GAO studies, University of Delaware, University of Michigan, the more recent Aaron Klein study & others. Also I trust my own first hand experience of making the dollar coins available at our facility vs just quarters. I also trust the experience other countries have had making the proper adjustment for inflation ... making the higher denominations coins on equal availability as the quarter. I'm sorry ... Russia may have a false pride that may make them defensive about sharing the dubious honor of similar waste when it comes to their paper money. Hopefully, the USA can have the good pride that we actually are on the road to correcting the problem.

As far as being falsely accused of having a bigger pig in the poke than others & falsely accused of condemning all electronic methods of payment ... I do not appreciate that. In fact, I see potential for the $5 bill in our 13 plus 6 spare back up bill acceptors to be more commonly used as the proper adjustment for inflation. Had I not thoroughly read & listened to both sides of the arguments I too would be more lukewarm & passive or even might be foolish enough to go with the less in depth considerations.

I agree... the average person doesn't know what a golden dollar is. So I am guessing the coin should go? So Obama was right? OH NO! :)

Plus NFC payments.... I was promised that!

My vote- bring on the dollar coin!! At the end of the day all my pocket coins go into a vacation jar.

Since the golden dollar coins have come out we have had them in the changers. I dispense dollar coins and tokens. (1 token=1 dollar bill / 2 tokens & 3 dollar coins=$5 bill / $10= 2x a $5 / $20= 4x a $5) there is about a 40% walk off with the dollar coins that I restock from my bank.
I find it sooo interesting how many customers have no idea what the golden dollar or the SSB coin is, they think it's a different token. The government spent billions to inform the handful of citizens about the coins.

All of our profit points accept tokens, dollar coins and quarters. (added CC in bays and few vacs a few years ago) We tried to get rid of the quarters but the people spoke up as to wanting to use qtrs. so we reaccepted them. I still can't figure out the customers who bring in small change to wash.
Yep, there is a huge trend towards plastic and much of the currency purchasing will go the way of the beloved checkbook. (BTW,98% of my bill payments and purchases are by check and cash. Cash still makes a big statement & no processing fee:)
