Since you're using a Windows-based DVR (presumably a PC) you can direct the storage anywhere you want. With a standalone DVR you're limited to what it will allow. Earl's is like mine; you can manually save files to a USB-connected hard drive or thumb drive but not use it for normal video storage, and nowhere does it allow storage via the network.

I have a wireless harddisk at my house. Works great, needs to be scheduled to back up at certain times of the day, week, month or I have to tell it to do it. It's not up to the minute, 24/7. I think the odds of mine being able to back up at the right moment to catch an event at a carwash right before the DVR is stolen would be highly unlikely. Other wireless harddisks may run different than mine.
