Employees driving company vehicles home

Have a sort of industry question. I have been under the impression that when you allow someone to drive a company car or van back and forth to work, that the wonderful IRS considers that income. And therefore you need to charge the person for that and deduct the tax from the paycheck. Anyone else aware of this?

Back when I was an employee and drove company cars my W-2 never showed any amount pertaining to the car. In later years I got a dollar allowance to furnish my own car which did show up on my W-2. I had to claim the allowance and depreciate the car.

I employ the "don't ask, don't tell" policy whenever possible.

You need to ask an accountant unless off course you employ the DADT strategy. For instance, if the employee is "On Call" and needs to have that type of vehicle that can accommodate tools and parts it may be a different classification.
