Floor Heat Circulating Pump - Spare

Now that I have adjusted and modified my floor heat, I want to have a replacement pump on hand in case I burn up my current one.

Here are the specs:

• Magnetek 1/2 HP
• 1725 RPM
• 8.2 amps
• Type - SP
• SF - 1.25

The part number is worn off, which would obviously be a huge help...is this a pretty standard motor that I could pick up from Grainger? How do I know if this is a constant duty cycle motor? It does say that it has thermal overload protection, but I would assume that is standard on most motors...

Is the pump a TACO

In 27 years of carwashing I've never had a floor heat pump puke. I keep a spare coupler (between the motor and pump) on hand. I have had those go bad.

What color is the pump?
If it is a taco pump they change the bushings on the ends of motor and if you get one from Grainger it will not fit, i no this because i had this happen to me

John, The Spec’s that you posted are the motor Spec’s and not the pump spec’s. Does your pump look like any of the pumps on this web site?

You really need the model number of the pump it’s self.

I don't know if they still do it or not, but Grainger used to open up virtually any time (weekends etc.) for a $50 fee.

They probably stock whatever you'd need.....and it'd be cheaper than keeping a spare in inventory.

Timely thread. Recently had my Taco floor heat pump dripping. Went to the local distributer wih a pump and they fixed me right up with the rebuild parts. No more leak.

I guess my concern is that its been in operation for 20+ years and I don't want to drop the ball if it goes out...from what I'm hearing from most of you is that if the pump isn't leaking it is essentially bulletproof...is that a true statement?

From the looks of the pump setup in the picture you posted I think it would be wise decision to have a spare pump setup ready to go. Without a label plate on the existing pump it might be hard to determine what the model number of the existing pump is. I’d contact TACO and see if they can help you determine which pump to get.

Original Motors???

It looks like from your picture that might be a Huron Valley Raypak setup similar to ours. It appears that you probably have a Sure-Flex Coupler between the motor & the pump. I recently changed the motor on mine that is mounted separately from the pump via the Sure-Flex. I am suspicious that the original motor was of better quality & more continous duty than the new Grainger replacement one that I bought locally. The reason being the new motor's internal centrifugal switch has gotten stuck almost burning out the new motor. I wonder if anyone has found a good source to buy the original motors for these Taco Pumps with the Sure-Flex Coupler between the Pump & the Motor? I think there is more to it than just matching up the Motor Frame & Mounting numbers like the local expert did.

I’ve never been a big fan of anything from Grainger. For the most part their motors are junk out of the box. The guy who repairs our motors won’t touch a motor from Grainger he said they are junk.
