I don't know what happened to the foot valves that hydro sold but maybe around five years ago they started becoming very unreliable and I've had many fail right out of the bag. I now use these two-EPDM for waxes and nuetrals, viton for strong acids and alkalines. I wish there was an all in one. Some waxes will ruin a viton model pretty quickly. They look completely different so I don't get them mixed up. Although if you look carefully the color of the oring is different so if you buy the ones that look alike you don't get them mixed up. I also mark the viton ones with V with a sharpie. I've had decent luck with them.
Dema Engineering foot valve is excellent for use when pumping solvents, crafted with corrosion resistant material and it is compatible with 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" tubing.

Also- debris in the chemical bucket? I keep my container lids on, and if my supplier sent me asnything with "gunk" in it I'd complain pretty quickly and get a replacement.
Edit to add- the edpm model doesn't work with 1/2" line. All I use now is 1/4"
