Update. Now R&L has given me a third reason for denying the claim. They responded to the complaint to the BBB that I filed. They said, rather stupidly, that since I signed the bill of lading and did not note any damages, they are off the hook. I got a copy of the BOL from R&L, and my signature is there only for picking up the equipment, not its delivery. Sent a copy of that to the BBB as proof. Three different reasons from the guilty party Does not pass the smell test. Will let you know how this turns out.

Update again. Have had to hire a lawyer for this, and it ain't looking good. For me. While R&L are clearly culpable, and here's where it gets interesting, they limit any damages to 0.50 per pound. It's in the fine print on their quotes that nobody reads. It says that there is more expensive coverage, but no one has ever mentioned it. So a used machine with a potential value of 20K is reduced to about $1,000. Be aware when you ship a machine. Ask the coverage questions before selecting a carrier.
