Loonie & Toonie to go High-Tech

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Loonies+toonies+could+high+tech/4316865/story.html

That will cost us a bundle as per my count I will have 21 different coin mechs and changers to either reprogram or replace :(

I have seen some counterfeit toonies over the years, but they only fool a person, machines don't accept them as the "ring" very different dues to size and metal content differences.

Always something....

It's hard to believe they would go thru the effort to counterfeit a low value coin. Alot more work than making paper money. It could be worse, we are on our second generation dollar coin, and neither is used at all. Mostly for coin collectors. Maybe it's time to switch to the IDX that will take six coins or just switch over to tokens only as a last resort.

Whale,

Well in Canada its a little different. We have heavily used $1 and $2 coins for a number of years now. I don't use the IDX because it has trouble differentiating between two types of quarters we have here (metal content changed a few years back). Even if I program both types separately as tokens. Weird.

My coinmechs are factory programed for Canadian coins and can handle 3 tokens. So I'll be able to program the new coins as tokens in them.

People here don't like tokens and not many washes use them as their sole dispensing coin.

A few years back a token making company in Quebec went out of business and the new buyers (organized crime) started making fake $2 coins. You could not tell the difference unless you very closely identified them. I would show them to people and ask them to pick out the fake one...none could. But when you dropped one on a counter top, the ringing sound was very different... hence why they didn't work in the coin mechs.
