A friend called me and said his high pressure functions in one bay are not working or work intermitently. He has changed the rotary switch and the motor starter but no change. Low pressure functions work fine.

Any ideas?

Ric, no offense, but debugging third hand is going to be tough - can your friend sign in and give us info? For example, which is it - is the HP not working or is it working intermittently? Does that mean not enough pressure, or no pressure at all?

If the problem is so vague that you can't even tell us whether it's not working or working intermittently, he seriously needs to just call someone. Paul is right, this could take weeks or months to diagnose, if ever.

It's for sure an electrical issue. High pressure does not work at all now. I'm going to go take a look at it for him this week. I just thought I'd throw it out there to forum members for some feedback. Sorry for the lack of info.

Have him start by switching face plates with another bay, or timers. At least it's a place to start when your lost.

If it is definitely electrical, and it was working intermittently before, and not at all now, my guess would be a bad connection - ie a loose wire. Could be any number of things though.

First thing I'd do is get out the multi-tester and see if you have 24V making it to the equip room. That way you at least know if you're working inside or outside.

Is there water in the fresh water tank (or has the low water cutoff cut power to your HP pumps). That could be one in 20 things, but I agree with Ric that it sounds electrical.

How about the contactor for the HP pump motor? Is it still good/functioning?

When mine did that it was just a tiny obstruction in the tip. I felt like an idiot.
