Customers are complaining about the sparrows that nest in the top of my Self Serve bays. The auto's aren't a problem, probably due to the deluge of water inside.

What is the easiest way to get them to give up, and go elsewhere?

destroy their nest? stretch some screen/netting over the area, shoot their butts with a pellet gun.

There are so many birds, with multiple nesting sites, that I'm looking at an ultrasonic solution..... When I "screened" over their nesting sites, they just start nesting on a nearby joist.

I thought about using that expanding foaming spray to fill in the spots. My fear is I would need a bunch of it, and that it might look pretty ugly.

If there was an electronic ultrasound device out there, I'd be interested in it.

I've got one but they are usually only against mice, rats, mozzies, etc. but it doesn't work for birds unfortunately.

I just ordered a unit from Bird-X. The ultrasonic frequency is set for birds vs. mice etc. I'll let you know how it works.

I also tried using spray foam in the open spaces. They just peck at it until there's a pile of it on the floor.

I guess a 22 would put to many holes in the roof. A shotgun would be the most fun. Maybe even take out a couple of vandals while I'm at it.

Years ago I had problems with Sparrows. The only way I could get rid of them was to constantly destroy there nests. If you keep destroying there home they?ll get the message and move on. After I got the nests under control I blocked in all the places they had nests will wood, spray foam isn?t going to work.

Pigeons are another story. They are a bitch to get rid of. There to dumb to get the message that it?s time to leave when you destroy there nests. Be warned that there nests and there dropping are a health hazard, they are loaded with all kinds of diseases. Just think of them as a RAT with wings.

pigeon blastin' fun

The "rats with wings" and "a shotgun would be the most fun" comments reminded me of a recent little article I did on dealing with bird pests ... pigeons mostly.

Here are a couple of my photo-illustrations from that rather amusing but informative piece. Those not-so-bird-lovers who would like a PDF of that article can get a copy if you email me.

If the birds are sitting on a narrow piece of something like a pipe, conduit, or narrow beam, try a product called Bird-B-Gone. I've used it in FL with good results. It's applied with a caulking gun. Leaves a clear bead of stuff that stays sticky for about a year. Drives them nuts.

All you have to do is get some mothballs and put them around the nest or just in the perlin in different places they will be gone
