I've got a JEAdams Shampoo and Fragrance machine 12000.
This machine has 2 switches:
1. Toggle between shampoo and fragrance
2. If fragrance is selected you now have the choice of 3 fragrances.
As we all know lots of customers don't read and don't understand. So I thought I'd make it easier and replace the two switches with a 5 selection rotary knob.
1. Shampoo
2. Stop
3. Wild Cherry
4. New Car
5. Vanilla
Great news. Easy - fast - and everyone understands it finally and also bad news:

Before customers put money in and wouldn't have a clue how to operate the machine. When they finally figured it out it was time to put more money in.
Now since it is so easy they actually can use their first coin :)
Turnover down 30% on that machine!!!
No - I won't change back because I think this was not right in the first place. :)

I have never figured out why they do vacs like that. Years ago I got a fragramatic fragrance vac. Same problem toggle this then toggle that. Talked to fragramatic told them that I thought they should rotary switch the vac. They pretty much told me thanks but no thanks. So since I look at vacs really close before buying. Have not bought another frag vac since.

The Industrial vacs (IVS) have push buttons on the face. When money is inserted, the vac comes on. There are buttons for Vac, Turbo Vac, Shampoo, Spot Remover. Very simple and seems to be operated easily by most customers.

I selected the IVS combo vacs because of this feature, instead of the toggle switches on the others.

Our Doyle units have a rotary switch - occasionally a customer just doesn't pay attention at all or even look at the instructions to see that you need the switch pointing to the selection you want. I much prefer the rotary switch because the few who lose their money tend to realize that it was their fault for not looking. There's no confusion as to having to check multiple switches or wanting shampoo and not knowing you have to start it with a button after you deposit money. People have had decades to learn how to use the rotary switch in the self-serve bays, so there's no transition at all when using a vac with one. Maybe it's a little "old school," but it works.
