How to install new vacuum islands

Please don’t tell me you’re going to put in a “Bill Breaker” changer!! They are a PINTA!! and they are a maintenance nightmare. I won’t sell them anymore, that's how much I like them. A few years ago we’ve figured out how the put a USA Technologies card reader on the front of a bill changer, only If you’re dispensing Tokens. Almost 70% of our business is plastic. I tired to post a picture but it was to big.

That is another reason why I & others are pro higher denomination coins like $1,$2 & even $5 etc. From our experience with the bill canisters ... there are issues with bills such as brand new sticking too much together & of course the bills that get like bathroom tissue or damp are also PITA! Plastic does have its attractiveness but for self service operators to not unite in favor of higher denomination coins as an option ... just does not make sense to me.

Why bother with bills at all....may as well go all credit/debit. So what if you loose a few customers.

FYI...just because my equipment accepts quarters and dollar coins along with bills and credit/debit...it doesn't mean just one coin will activate equipment, one still needs to deposit the posted amount to activate equipment.

Earl, thanks for reminding me. I will never forget how my momma sometimes would say to my daddy "your slippin" ... & she very aggressively took the business records away from him & then took her turn at being a bit more involved in the business & likewise my daddy would say & do the same to her as needed. Both had a background in accounting & they made a good team.

I don't have a crystal ball for the future but there could come a day where some self service bays & vacuums will have signs up stating NFC - RFID ONLY ... especially for those who have their hearts set so much on just payment processing gateways & away from all cash.

FYI ... we did get our heavily used ATM upgraded with the EMV debit & credit capability this afternoon to tune of about $300 for the one reader in a non overspray area of our facility.

Back to original question..... Be sure that if you use concrete, put a pier in the ground along with the concrete pour to support the weight and stabilize the island. If it gets hit-odds are it won't move. Don't just lay the island on top of the parking lot concrete.


Use plastic conduit to the island and be sure to oversize the conduit. You may want to add features later that we all do not know about yet.
Position trash can carefully and if you pour a hole for the trash, be sure to make it large enough for about a 44 gallon Rubbermaid can. A poured trash hole needs a drain hole in the bottom to drain rain water and liquids from holy trashcans.

Go out on the parking lot with chalk and draw your island, mark the vacuums, place for the trashcan, etc. Take measurements and make notes. What direction does the cleanout door open and are there obstacles in the way. Where and what type of light pole. Or do you want to put the lighting someplace else than the island.
Then also consider the elevation of the island. Too high, short customers have problems-too low, back problems to clean them out.
When I am doing a project, I try to talk with people who do some of this stuff for a living. I draw up my plans, make notes and go talk to them. Concrete contractor, electrician, plumber, framer, etc. They even know the laws and ordinances you may need to consider. Good money spent and if they don't charge me I give them $20 in tokens.

And never put an electrical junction box on the horizontal portion of the island with the cover on top. Water tight isn't forever. Even on the side I would put a drain hole to the exterior for water and condensation that migrates to it.
