My soft cloth units sling dirt on the wall and require much more work than the touch free to keep them looking clean. . I have the attendant wash the walls and machine weekly with a dish soap type detergent.
Touch frees get a monthly acid wash. The soft cloth also gets an acid wash but less frequently

Greg - do you have an Istobal friction machine? I thought they had the option of having the brush guards for the side brushes that would either eliminate or greatly reduce the sling on your walls. Do you have a them?

I have them on one machine. The other site didn't have adequate clearance. They do help, but don't entirely eliminate the problem. As expensive as they are I probably wouldn't buy them again.
I have extrutech at the busier site (aprox 1K per Month) so a quick weekly wash is an easy job. An attendant can hit the dirty parts of the walls in 30 minutes. Just a light brushing with a cup of Dawn in a bucket of warm water and rinse. We even brush the machine but don't bother rinsing, we just let the next car rinse it off. At the less busy site (maybe 500 cars per Month) it gets washed every couple of weeks.
I do try to keep the machines looking fairly clean. If I wasn't paying a guy to be there it would probably get done a lot less frequently. I would recommend at least monthly but it all depends on wash volume.
