I currently have mars 2612 validators in all of my self serve bays. Unfortunately I need to get a few more as some of them are beyond repair. I was wondering if I could use any of the other 24 volt validators that mars makes. For instance the there seems to be a lot of 2512 available on eBay for a good price. Could I use these validators as replacements?

If I remember right Randy Nix gave me a heads up that the 2612 has to be specifically spec'd as a car wash duty validator. I stand corrected... if I am wrong.

Can you use a VN2512 in your coin box, No not right out of the box. They will only work in your coin box if you have an MEI Enable jumper plug on the validator. The VN2512 is made for the vending industry. Your Mars AE2612 validators must be in pretty bad shape if they can’t be repaired. The 24 volt Mars validator you want to use is an AE2412, they only accept 1$’s and $5’s. The AE2612 validator will accept $1’s - $20’s.

Is there drawbacks that the rest of us might not see in having selected the AE2612 instead of the AE2412? We get a big enough number of 10s in ours to make sense for us in the bays. Our dog wash gets some 20s ... so the 20s even make sense there. We have been debating on possibly upping the bay validators to also accept $20s.
On a side note, we just needed the right harness for the AE2612 to be usable in our AMS MegaVendor. For our Internet NetStop Kiosk Edutainment Center in our laundromat ... we just needed a USB adaptor & driver both obtained from MEI ... but still used the core AE2612. I suppose the changing of the harnesses would actually change the specific number of the MEI validator???

We accept every denomination currency that the validator is designed to accept, $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20’s. We set the validators to accept 4 way acceptance, this makes it easier for the customers who can’t read or understand instructions. We get very few bills that are upside down.
There’s more to just changing the harness to use a validator in one piece of equipment to another. The validator has to be designed for the product you’re trying to install the validator in. A VN2512 will not work in a coin box or a anything else that is a Pulse signal without the Enable jumper plug, VN validators use MDB protocol. A AE2612 or AE2602 will work in a coin box and in a vending machine as they are both Pulse and MDB. One of the nice things about a Mars validator is you can switch out the Bezel on the front of the validator and use the validator in another application. An example would be you can take a AE2612 out of a coin box, take off the compact bezel and install a VFM bezel and install the validator into a Goldline ACW or you can install a downstack bezel and make it a downstacker validator. You want to make sure the voltage is correct before you swap bezels, the forth number is the validator voltage, “1” is 110 volt and “2” is 24 volt. A word of caution always turn off the power to the validator before you unplug the harness from the side of the validator and make sure you have the plug install correctly before turning the power back on. It is possible to incorrectly plug in the harness on the side of the validator, when that happens the smoke comes out of the validator and it won’t work anymore.

Randy is right about that plug. One would think that with all my years in this biz, letting the smoke out of one validator would teach me to be more careful. Well, it took me two. Anyways, I sent them to Randy to have the smoke put back in and they're still in service.

A bit like a guy yesterday told me his "blue healer" dog needed to be cleaned up at our dog wash in order to go to the hospital to cheer up some patients. The dog was all over me & I made a slip of the tongue & said to the dog "now ... don't you go lovin those people at the hospital to death!

Hoooked up stuff fom time to time and smoke came out (transformers, contactors) . Filled the equipment room. Soemtimes Fire came out too.

I have a brand new MARS AE-2602-U5 that I removed from my new pay station and replaced with a Vantage since that is what I run in all my self serve bays. The validator was new in the pay station in 2007 so will need $5 and $10 updates loaded on it, but I would make someone a good deal on it, just to get it off my shelf.

No Mike, none of the Mars validator are water resistant. Spray water into them a few times and you’ll have problems. Some people seem to think that all of the Coinco Vantage validators are water resistant but they aren’t, it all depends on the model Vantage validator.
Putting the “Smoke” back into a Mars validator can be a challenge and it can get expensive. When you plug in the power in the wrong direction it will destroy the main board right now. The main board is around $110. Pat you’re not the only one here on the Forum who has let the smoke out.
Bringing back a question from the dead. I've got a couple vn2512's laying around and was wanting to use them in a meter box. I've got the jumper plug but it only gives a quarter credit no matter how the switches are set. Is there any way to make these work for this application or are they just good for plastic parts?
