Told the guys at the D&S booth that I grease my gantrys once a month and they said that's ok if I use Mobil 1 grease. It's $13 tube, is it that much better?

I have always greased my gantries once a month. I think that is what the maintenance schedule calls for on a Jim Coleman WW 1.0. How often do they recommend you grease yours? I use a green "marine" grease that I buy at Advanced Auto. I think it is $6 a tube.

When i had a gantry i used Mobil1 till it became so expensive and then was told the marine grease has better resistance to water, and yes that grease is that much better than the low cost grease.

I use super lube brand synthetic grease. I just noticed that it's now in Kleen Rite's catalog at a pretty good price. I grease monthly. Have no idea if it is any better, the colorless grease just seemed cleaner to me.

I always used/recommended marine grade wheel bearing grease (made for greasing the hubs on boat trailers). It's fairly cheap and doesn't absorb water. I used to service 5000's, and the customers who used marine grease had less problems from wear. It was the guys who used the cheapest stuff from the parts store that had the most problems, and they usually overgreased.

I used a product called "Aqualube" can't find it anymore, but fortunately, I don't need it anymore. I use a penetrant/lubricator called "Fluid Film" works great as a penetrating oil and as a lubricant for moving parts and chains on some of the autos.

I guess that begs the question, how do you know when you're overgreasing? My simple procedure has been 1-2 pumps on small bearings (oscillating nozzles, until I see oozing) and 4 pumps on large bearings such as drive wheels. No bearing problems in 5 years so I guess I'm getting it fairly close.
I use a Lincoln cordless grease gun (highly recommend, btw), so I don't have a good feel for resistance.
I had to order the Mobil 1 synthetic grease, which arrived yesterday - is red and appears much thicker than the marine grease I was using.

A lot of times if you are greasing once a month, water will come past the seal as you pump the grease. If it has been a little under greased, pump until the water stops coming out. If you stay on top of it, two pumps a month should do. Also remember to TIGHTEN THE SET SCREWS ON THE RACE!!!!!!!!!
