New $5.00 Upgrade Chip

The government will be releasing the new $5.00 sometime in early 2008. Hamilton now has the upgrade chip available for the XE and STA Validators. The XE can be updated in the field, however the STA will need to come in to Hamilton or sent to a Factory Train Service Representative (FTSR) to be updated.

The HVX is obsolete and not upgradeable. It must be replaced if you plan to accept anything larger than a one.
There were a couple of upgrades during the first releases of new bills, but none of the second redesign bills will ever make their way through an HVX.

The HVX bill validators are no longer supported for software upgrades (new currency releases) since they went out of production 6 years ago. You can thank to US Bureau of Printing and Engraving for this. For years the bill validators read the bills magnetically. With the newer currencies they have changed to magnetic properties of the ink that is used to print the bills. Forcing the bill validator manufactures into going to a optic reader system.

For those of you who are using Coinco bill validators the new $5 bill software upgrade has been released.

I'm a little tired of being told every few years that the Hamilton validators that replaced the last non upgradeable ones once again can not be upgraded. Is this true with coinco/mars/others?

Not so far with Mars. The 2600 series have been around a long time now and are still fully upgradeable.
