As we posted in our CCWE report we found Coinco’s new wireless Arrow card reader system which is compatible with both our merchandisers (MDB) and with the rest of the equipment (pulse driven) at car washes. It is very similar to the Edge e-Port system (MDB mainly) that we have been using for years, but it has features that allow the car wash operator to have more choices in how credit cards are accepted and processed. (More about this later)

We sold a ShurVend Junior RL (rearload) merchandiser while at the show and the new owners wanted this Arrow system installed in it. So we became the guinea pigs and had to learn to make this reader work even though it was not understood very well by the seller and brand new to us. We received emailed instructions and other paperwork from InOne (designer and builder) to help us and, with our long experience installing e-Port readers in our merchandisers, we got started with the process. We got it installed in the merchandiser very quickly, turned it on, made it work as it was designed, and shipped the ShurVend Junior RL merchandiser to the customer on May 12.

The Arrow card reader has more options and features than current e-Port models.
1. It can be used with pulse-based systems (car washes) and with the current merchandiser systems (all MDB) which we use.
2. It has an audio system built in that speaks to the customer when they use it. After swiping the card it says “Please Make a Selection” and, after the selection is vended, it says “Thank You”. It is multi-lingual also.
3. There are choices that the operator can make for a card processing company so an existing processor may be programmed into the reader. This is not the case with the e-Port; USA Technologies (owner of the e-Port) is the only processor allowed.
4. There is an online website that Arrow owners can log into to keep track of your inventory, alerts you to any problems with the merchandiser, bill validator, or coin changer.

Since the Arrow has all these features it is priced about $75 higher than an equivalent system from e-Port. The audio system alone may be worth the little extra that it costs to make the customer more comfortable using it.

We will learn much more as we install these readers in our merchandisers and more features will probably be added to this device. The trend toward cashless operations in car washes is growing rapidly and we think that cashless will soon become the major payment option in all the car wash equipment with a minority still being done with cash. These cashless systems solve many problems when used at a car wash site including vandalism and theft attempts.
