I added Rain X Online Protectant a few months ago, and the response from the customers has been amazing. I'm selling it like crazy and the customers tell me they love it because they can see a difference. I know the initial excitement will diminish with time, but that is what has me thinking of the next extra service to add.

If I add a carnauba wax product to my menu, would you recommend applying it as well as the Rain X, or instead of the Rain X? Aren't the wax products more hydrophobic, thus negating any effect an application of Rain X would have after it? It will be offered in my top package and I am wondering if other operators with both services still apply the Rain X with the carnauba.

Rain-X total body is super hydrophobic meaning its surface contact angle (100 degrees) is greater than drying agent (80 degrees). Rain-X sells well because it works and motorists actually want to buy it.

Hot wax containing carnauba or polymer is also super hydrophobic. Carnauba has contact angle of 120. However, hydrophobic effect is not additive.

In other words, 100 plus 120 = 120

So, Rain-X would be a waste.

Why not add the "real" RAIN X. That is the windshield treatment, that is, if you live in a rainy area. It costs pennies and is easy to apply and you can sell it for a good margin or add it into a package as "value-added."

Bud - thanks for the advice. Currently, I have no after-care component to my wash. We do not towel dry, and I am not looking to add labor at this point. I'd like to exhaust the online offerings before increasing my labor. I agree - "real" Rain X would be one of my first options when I get to that point with the wash.

Do you offer an online tire shine?
How about adding the heated Cobra CTA and offer it as an add on to you prices or on your top package and raise the package price.

Consider menu merchandising. Merchandising involves design, layout and content of menu. If you merchandise correctly, it can be a factor in determining how much customers will spend.

Image is crucial. For example, if you sell hot wax, the menu should have photo that displays the “foaming wax” to sway customers.

Since your washing and waxing vehicles, menu should be loud and bright. The color scheme should match the scheme of the carwash.

Besides always having a clean appearance, the menu should be professionally designed and manufactured not homemade.

Menu should have up-sell components like offering premium brands and few add-on options.

For instance, someone buys a basic wash and then before paying a drop-down menu prompts/asks customer if they would like to add hot wax and shine for just several dollars more.

To help increase sales, you can create signature service with premium brand name in the ingredients. Some operators turn their noses up this tactic because premium costs more than bathtub products.

Menu should be arranged to highlight items that return higher profit margins. Consider using icons instead of naming convention. Devote an entire section at bottom of menu to alert customers of special deals.

All of this combined can help increase the likelihood that customers will add on to their choices.

Yes, we do have a Cobra unit, high pressure and a brush cleaning the wheels. We currently do not have a tire shine unit. With my current equipment layout and at this point in time, adding the wax would be more feasible as my next upgrade.

Yes, we have a very bright, colorful menu with graphics and icons. Our scented products have icons representing their scents - like oranges and berries etc. The menu is backlit on the exterior of the wash and the interior prep area of the wash has a replica of the menu where the purchased package flashes as the vehicle is loaded onto the conveyor and renters the wash. All signs and graphics throughout the tunnel match in color. This was all professionally designed for us.

AFAIAC Tire Shine application is probably one of the extra service options where the result is most apparent.

It seems this would be your most obvious choice, not just as an a la carte item but a package upgrade.
