Physical water conditioner VS soft water system

I had a rep approach me with the idea of replacing my soft water system (salt) with a physical water conditioner ( magnet style).

Has anyone installed a PWC ? What was the result?

I would love to cutback/eliminate my salt usage.

I have a friend who has one he uses with well water and he is convinced it reduces the buildup on the auto walls and equipment.

I tried one briefly and it did not help with foaminess or cleaning ability at my site.

Ah yes - magnets ! It's the next best thing to perpetual motion. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. For magnets to have an effect on something, to me it must contain some steel. The dissolved minerals in water are not that. And even if it did somehow do something, it does not remove anything as a softener does.
