If I tried to call in sick there would be no one there to answer the phone. But luckily with n 8 Bay Self Serve and 3 changers there is some redundancy.

I had two full time employees and my washes were well taken care of in my absence. On the flip side of this, I lost both of them at about the same time. One of them (my sister and bookkeeper) was struck down by a stroke one day and is now permanently disabled. Less than a month later, the other had a health issue that put him out of commission for almost 8 months. I had gone from coasting along, working 30-35 hrs. a week, to 70+ hrs. for the next 8 months. Having no clue how to do the books, I was in a world of hurt. I found someone pretty quickly that said they could help me out part time with them. He didn't work out, so we quickly parted. Luckily, my niece was closing a store that she had for years and came to help out. I ended up hiring her full time and she was a little dynamo, stayed with me until I sold the washes, and with the new owner as well.

Last July I had a stroke during a heart procedure which affected my eyes and my right side. While I was lounging in a hospital bed I decided that enough is enough and that I was going to start scaling back as I knew this was going to be life changing. Thank God I’ve got a really good employee who wants to learn more and take on more responsibly. My wife has pretty much taken over a lot of the day to day operations. I do what I can do and what I can’t do I’ve got people who can. I might be down but I’m not out yet, I still manage to go to the car wash 3 times a week.

I did everything myself for the first 4 years but by the time I had 3 washes I finally found and hired a employee who stayed 18 years until the county had a much higher paying job and hired him away. About the same time my son was getting out of the Navy and came to work with me and has been here since. It is a special thing to get along with your kids enough to stay that close in touch with them and get to work with them.. I grew up in a family business so it just feels natural to continue along this way.

Hi Randy, I'm glad to hear you're scaling back, though it took a shot across your bow to get your attention. Sorry to hear about your stroke & grateful you're healing! Thank goodness for your employee & wife!! Stay well & balanced my friend, you're an asset to the Forum! 🥰
