Question about trash.

What kind of trash can do y'all use and do you use trash bags?

Our trash cans are built into our Vac Isles. We use a cut down 55 gallon drum as a liner and place a 35 gallon Brute or Rubbermaid trash can inside. You can save some money by not using trash bags, but if you use the 3 mil 42 gallon trash bags it makes dealing with the trash really simple. They will hold the weight of a car battery and if they get water in the bottom you can use a knife to make a few slits and let the water out, without the bag coming apart.

I use rubbermaid type trash cans in the vac islands, and 45gal Hexagon containers around the building. I use 39gal drawstring bags, and 55 gal bags, both from Sam's Club. Sam's has best price I've found on a bag that will hold up to most of the trash loads.

I also use Rubbermaid Brute trash cans in 55-gal. drums that are set into the concrete islands. I don't use trash bags, I just dump them straight into the dumpster and wash out a couple of the dirtiest cans every day. They last ten years if no one is dragging them around to dump them.

The more garbage cans you have the more garbage you’re going to get. I wonder how much money we’ve saved in the last 32 years by not using bags or liners.

I have 3 -30 gallon soap barrels at each vacuum island (3) and 7 -30 gallon in 3 bays.I don't use liners,just wash the barrels out.

I totally agree. I have a 30 gal. plastic soap drum that we cut the lid off and drill holes in the bottom and 4 holes at the top for a rope handle at each vac island. And 5 gal. pails at the end of each bay. We replace them as necessary. Maybe every 1 1/2- 2 years. We make sure we put holes in everything or they will empty the trash on the ground and use them to bucket wash everything.

My wash was built back when they put the vacs at the entrance to each bay. I have a 35 gallon Rubbermaid Dome Top can in front of each island, total of (3). The cans have half moon rings that you tuck the liner in. It helps keep the liner from being pushed down into the can and making a mess. It looks nicer since the liner is not sticking out under the lid. It tucks away inside the can.

I get my liners from here, they are about $25.00 a box of 100 if you order 8 or more boxes including free shipping. It cost me (Maybe) $100 a year for liners.

Giving it more thought, I'd like to get rid of my current cans and go the same route as Randy or something similar. We constantly need to think smarter in this business to keep from throwing $$$ away when you don't have to.

You can use bags and save money by re using them. This can help keep your cans clean. I think you fit more trash in your dumpster without bags. So you can:
A: Use bags in your cans ad leave them in as you just empty the can inro the dumpster leaving the bag in ;or
B. Pull the bags out, take them to the dumpster, empty them and re use the bags. This is the harder option and bags won't last as long.

Using A, you may be able to dump the cans 4 times or more with the same bag unless it's really nasty and you want to get rid of it.

My islands have 55 gallon barrels that were placed when the islands were poured in. They serve as a good size receptacle for a a 30 gallon barrel. We just use empty chemical barrels with rope handles. The bottoms are really slick and they drag great, even when weighted down, on concrete. We wear it out the bottoms after a year or so, but they're free so it's no biggie.
