Hi

I use quickbooks for my accounting and payroll.

I just received a notice that I paid $700+ for the subscription. I was shocked at the cost.

Does this seem excessive?

What does everyone else pay for QB Pro?

I need some opinions before calling them. Thanks!

Waxman & others,

Granted there is a bit of possibly more learning curve ... but I still think that if an person doesn't have too complicated of an operation ... setting up with a database program that can output reports in CSV & accept online financial CSV exports is the way to go. The CPA that we had for decades actually preferred my reports over many of his other customers. I kind of wish he would not have had to retire or had someone similar to hand off to.

I can't pretend to speak for currently available CPA-accountants ... so maybe some operators can share what CPAs are telling them. On my payroll ... I go to the Gov't Pub Circular 15 every year & the pertinent (new year) field data is changed on my 2-5 employee payroll database. Possibly Quickbooks Payroll earns their keep when it comes to garnishments, during year itself rate changes & complicated benefits though ... not sure ...

Possibly ... Quickbooks automates both the sending in for Fed'l & State enough to justify their annual cost???

The last few years I have been very satisfied with https://www.efilemyforms.com/ when it comes to the few 1099 Misc that are needed to be processed by us every year. Maybe Quickbooks includes that service for the $700 annual ... not sure ...

Are you using Quickbooks Online or did you purchase the installable Quickbooks Pro? The former is an annual subscription, the latter is a one-time purchase, currently for sale on Amazon for $190.

You should be able to use Quickbooks software to do payroll. It calculates deductions and generates bills to tax entities, you just have to print paychecks and manually pay the tax bills. Quickbooks basic payroll is only $22.50 plus $4 per employee per month, so it sounds like you're either overpaying or you may have signed up for much more than you need.

I never did know if a form of Quickbooks Pro automated the payment of the list of gov't entities & the independent contractors (1099misc) after the amounts are generated. How often varies depending on how much liability is generated per week or whatever. For me that tends to be quarterly obligations (EFTPS etc.) but I am thinking Waxman has a more frequent need. Also I am small enough so I manually write out payroll checks based on what shows up on the prebuilt form specific record ... rather than auto print them or have it automatically go into the employees account. There was a major discussion similar to this on the CLA laundromat operators forum & some did switch from Quickbooks Pro service to some others because of increasing cost & quality of service.

Quickbooks Pro isn't a service, it's a single-user accounting software. Payroll service is where you just give that company (Obviously Intuit in this case) employee hours and they generate paychecks or auto-deposits and pay your tax bills from your accounts. How often depends on your payroll schedule for paychecks, and what the tax entity requires (Monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.). The latter has nothing to do with "your needs." This "learning curve" you mentioned is non-existent - when doing payroll with Quickbooks, you just input hours and pay rate, and the internal tax tables generate all outgoing tax schedule bills.

Nothing you've mentioned has any bearing on the subject of this thread, which is the COST of the payroll service.

I am still using Quickbooks '99 😁 I just calculate my few employees deductions manually, and pay the taxes electronically. I just have not seen the need to upgrade--plus I am tight. I might add, I still use a flip phone.

(I know this does not answer your question, sorry)

The last place I worked upgraded from Quickbooks 2003 in 2016. The 2003 was still fully functional for payroll, you just had to download current tax tables which is a single click.

I was still using a flip phone until some time in August. It was almost ten years old so I figured it was time for an upgrade.

I recently did an upgrade on my Mac which rendered my older version of QB obsolete ( 64 bit OS vs 32 bit software ). After that happened I finally decided to hire a bookkeeper to work with my accountant.

Best money I ever spent.

I use quickbooks99 also. I salary my employees so the paychecks are the same every payday. I figure out the payroll stuff once per year.

It is brand new. Just got it two months ago. It was the last Samsung Convoy 4 on the East Coast. This is my fourth of that model--love them.
I hate to tell you, but you're going to have to move to a smart phone soon since there aren't any flip phones that work on 5G. I'm with Verizon and they're totally shutting down 4G by the first of next year.

They are shutting down 3G not 4G but still might be the same issue.

I switched to PayWindow (zpay.com) several years back and do my payroll myself. 45 bucks annually to update. Easy... And saves me money. Even fills in quarterly 941's.
