From our experience there are High Rejection (HR) & Standard Rejection (SR) Ours is a "chlorine tolerant pH not tolerant" CA membrane. We only have one 4x40 CA. We notice if our water softener is ever not working the prefilter shows iron color quickly & our membrane's ppm screening capability becomes less. pH other than "6" affects the life also.
I am hoping someone else on the Forum has a CA membrane setup so I can compare notes with them some also. Most here have the TF membrane setup that needs the charcoal filter it seems.
I am not sure on the quality of brands ... We have used 2 different brands Osmonics & TSA with an adaptor.

I've always used the Filmtec brand TFC membranes. You need to use a CA if you don't have a chlorine prefilter, but as a rule the Filmtec last at least five years if the rest of the system is maintained properly (including the softener).
If you have a carbon prefilter and you replace the membrane, you should replace the carbon media at the same time.

I agree, except that I suggest replacing the carbon a couple weeks before you replace the membrane. Every time I've replaced carbon I get some carbon dust out of it for a few days.
(It does get trapped in a sediment pre-filter before it gets to the RO, but better safe than sorry.)
I would suggest soaking the carbon media for 12 - 18 hours, then doing a manual regeneration and flush before hooking it up to your membrane(s).
