Another rainy day here so I took some time and figured up some weather factors at various US locations for the last 5 years. It would be interesting to know if the weather factor worked for other operators like it does for me.
Tacoma Wa. 2010 =1.69 , 2009=2.65, 2008=1.49, 2007=1.94,2006=2.75
5 year average= 2.10
Fort Knox Ky. 2010=3.03,2009=2.14,2008=2.43,2007=2.77,2006=1.86
5 year average=2.45
San Deigo Ca. 2010=3.20,2009=3.87,2008=4.55,2007=4.46,2006=3.82
5 year average= 3.98
You can't compare the averages to each city for $ but it does give you an idea of the difference in sunny and partly sunny days at each location. San Deigo having almost twice as many prime car washing days per year as Tacoma. If the forumla works I would guess that 2009 and 2006 would be the best sales years for a established wash in Tacoma. 2008 would be the best year for sales in San Deigo. This would assume that the washes stayed about the same in overall operations during these 5 years.
San Deigo is considered one of the best climates in the US so I would think its weather would be considered optimal for a car wash. Still with a weather factor below 5 it has less than 50% ideal conditions for car washing.
Over half of the days are not good for washing a car. A place like Tacoma only gets 2 days out of 10 for prime car washing. I wonder how many car wash manufacturers figure any of this into the proformas the regularly hand out to get people to build car washes. It is kinda scary to think so many days are lost to weather in this business. At least people in Tacoma will wash a car when it is cloudy. Here that is not the case, one cloud in the sky and people do not wash a car.

After a little more research I have found the reason the Pacific Northwest has had such a terrible winter. It seems that LA nina that occured this winter is the most severe in almost a century. The cooling effect of water around the equator has sent 2 to 3 times more moisture to the Northwest. Texas has suffered with a lack of moisture. The good news is that water temps are returning to normal around the equator which should lead to normal weather pattern again.
