`Just changed carbon and gravel in the carbon filter. Replaced 5 micron filter and membranes. It has been 2 weeks and by membranes have failed. I cut them open and it has fine black carbon. I flushed the system for along time before putting the new membranes in. Any ideas of what my problem could be?

your pre-filter should be in between the carbon tank and the RO unit - is it? That should have trapped the carbon dust, I'd expect to change that filter a week or 2 after changing the carbon.

The filter is in between the carbon and RO. It has some slight brown color and was changed when we did the carbon change. We just changed it 2 weeks ago and put a new one in last night.

Get a chlorine test kit. Check for chlorine. If it has chlorine after your carbon filter then the carbon filter isn't working. that is pretty much the only thing that ruins my membranes.

I've seen something like what you're talking about in a small town. The city flushed the water lines which released an ultra-fine, rust colored sediment into the lines that clogged the membranes. A .35-micron prefilter was able to trap it.

Did you flush the new carbon when you changed it? (after changing media, before hooking the filter up again)

He said he flushed the carbon filter, and he said the prefilter is between the carbon filter and the system. That would have caught any remaining particles.

Thanks to all the help and advice. But I think I figured it out. Two weeks ago my carbon filter head stuck in back flush mood. It dumped carbon in my system pluging up every thing. My filter, membranes, all pluged full. and I think I have leftover carbon gunk.
