What is the water bowl? Upload some pics if you can.
Usually the prefilter will have a gauge both before and after the filter, and it should be changed when there's a noticeable drop in the second gauge, which means it's dirty and restricting flow. There's typically no other PM, other than checking for chlorine in the reject (Easier to spot that way because it will be concentrated).
