RO system without softener ??

I saw an ad in the autolaundry magazine for a spot free RO system made by carolina pride that says "no softener required". It doesn't look much different than your typical RO system. I wonder if this thing actually works and what the life span of the RO membranes would be? I would think the thing would go through a lot of RO membranes without a water softener.

I looked into it a while back. I don't remember the number but within their fine print was a limit on the grains of water hardness entering the system. I believe it was in the single digits.
