Securing Pit Grates

Well, there is always a first for everything. Today someone decided to steal one of our grates . I hope this trend does not continue. How r u guys securing grates?

Check the local scrapyard.

At a wash I had that problem at I just drilled a masonry anchor in the side of the pit near the top and attached a chain to grate.

Definitely check with the closest scrap yard, reputable ones have good surveillance and are more than willing to see crooks busted. plenty of shady ones out there that don't, unfortunately.

Although this wasn't a problem for me, I figured I would do the following. As pits were cleaned, I would attach a chain to a concrete block and throw it in the bottom. Attach the other end to the grate, with enough slack to allow the grate to be removed for access. The block will quickly be "glued" down by mud. Easy, cheap, and will probably work.

That is pretty good idea. I just might do this.

You can just weld or bolt two small tabs at each end then secure to the ground with tapcons/anchor. Next time you go to clean the pits or have it pumped all you have to do is undo two screws and your not dealing with a cement block and chain stuck to the bottom. I like that idea if your trying to bury a body under the grate but as far as holding down a grate its a little excessive, more headache, and more expensive then a few tapcons and two small metal tabs.

How do you know you won't pierce a floor heat line?

Heated floor lines are not at the top of concrete. You can drill two inches into concrete and not hit anything. This case only requires 1 1/4 stainless steel tap cons. Up here in Michigan all our floors are heated. Anything we want to mount to the ground including rollover tracks, signs, canopies, garbage cans, etc. this is how you do it. I just installed a Istobal and put over 100 anchors into the ground. I’ve hit one line in past ten years and it was because I drilled too deep. Do not drill more than two inches.
