Last year we briefly had an employee with detailing experience and it opened my eyes to the value of the detail work - not only for vehicle preservation but also in terms of increased personal/team pride and general fleet appearance and presentation.

I believe training is valuable and worth the investment assuming you find the right trainer and program. We are not washing/detailing for commercial purposes, but rather doing this in-house for our own fleet. So I'm looking for someone to come to our facility (Cleveland, OH) that will provide quality/real training for several of our employees on the type of work we need to do for our vehicles. Finding the right person who can train, is willing to train and looks at this as a consulting engagement rather than loss of work is important.

Last year I saw the drastic change - as evidenced on these two trucks side by side, consider it a "before and after". If you have any suggestions on who we might contact - either post information here or send me a PM please. Thank you.

The type of detail will depend on how much time you have to work with the vehicle. On a labor or down time basis.

The one truck looks new. :) if they start with that care they will hold up well and maintaining the finish is easier.. The second truck will need double the work to restore it to look like the first.

Why wouldn't you just contract with a local detail shop to maintain the appearance of your vehicles?

We'd like to do the work in-house, primarily because I can give my guys additional hours when we're a little slower. Additionally when I have had my personal vehicles detailed it's several days plus dropping off and picking up - while the high value part of what we currently lack the skill on is the buffing. After prep/cleaning that's about two to three hours of work for the cab - which we can fit in at our convenience rather than trying to schedule 12-15 vehicles at a detailers. We own the equipment and have materials, now it's mostly a labor question. I don't expect a high end detail (ie clay bar, dents/scratch restoration) on work trucks - regular cleaning and once or twice a year buffing will keep them looking great relative to the rest of the competition.

On-site training is expensive and many OEM’s no longer offer the service. Employees can be sent for training and there is also self-help available.

You might consider these two resources.

Nick Vacco, great detailer, good people.

Thomas Palancia, the guy’s an ace.
