All,

It was suggested to me that I can extend the manifold life (and seals) on my 5120W Cat pumps by putting Hylomar (non-setting, sealing and gasketing
compound) around the valve seat o-rings and around the outside of the
high pressure seal.

Do any of you do this and if so, did it help?

i ordered a free dvd from cat's website showing the procedure for changing the seals and valves. on the dvd they use "liquid gasket" (same thing?). i imagine it will help to prolong the life of the seals, but there are many other things that could simultaneously reduce the life of the seals as well (like worn out springs). it might be tough to tell in the long run how well it works.

I used Hylomar on the valve o-rings for years, and when I ran out and couldn't find more I just started dipping the base of the valve in ND-30 oil to lubricate the o-rings before reinstalling. There doesn't seem to be any difference at all in the life of the o-rings; if anything they last longer with oil. As far as the high pressure seals, I tried Hymolar on a couple pumps and had to pull one apart a week later for a different problem. There was no sign of the Hylomar ever having been applied to the seals, and I packed it in pretty thick.

Is it Voodoo?

What other tricks or voodoo is needed to get these pumps to last? It would seem that this is a lot of trickery to achieve what should be a basic durability in the pumps.

Big Leo,

The replacement for the Hylomar product because it is so tough to get is Permatex # 85409 according to either Permatex or a Cat Pump application engineer. I don't remember which because it has been a few years since we when through the process of finding a suitable replacement. Anyway the replacement product seems to be working well for us for the last few years for our Cat 310 pumps. Maybe there is an even better replacement now that Cat or Permatex can recommend. It is labeled as a dressing & sealant.

I just sent tech support at Cat an e-mail so that we can get some clarification. I will keep you posted.

I use a gasket sealer, I think it is permatex. Blue stuff, we called it "form a gasket" when I was a kid.

Are you using a non-hardening sealer? Using regular blue Permatex can do more harm than good.
