The use of a generic glass-front vending machine in the self-serve car wash setting began sometime in the 1980’s with individual operators trying to make these vendors dispense car wash products. The vending machines at that time were designed so the helix (spiral or coil) would make one turn (360 degrees) and stop. Car wash products are difficult to vend with one turn, so customers who didn’t get their product took out their frustrations and loss of money on the machine

In 1998 a salesman for a company where I bought bill validators told me about a new company called AMS that sold a patented vending system called “Guaranteed Delivery”; this new technology solved most of the problems in vending car wash products. Now the only thing that needed to be addressed was the security of the machine without making it look like the vendor was in “jail”. When you are open 24/7/365, with no attendants around most of the time, security of the vendor became the primary concern for operators.

ShurVend showed its first product (a combined vendor/security cage system) at the WCA show in Las Vegas in 1999. I still remember an operator from San Francisco sitting on a chair at that show studying our vending system for at least an hour. He bought one of our first vendor/cage packages for one of his washes and that vendor is still in operation to this day. He eventually bought 5 more vendors to install in various washes he owned.

Most of us who design new equipment are not inclined to “re-invent” the wheel if there is something already built that can be modified to do what we want to do. ShurVend, along with some clever operators, used existing vendors that worked reasonably well and then designed security systems around them. Since 1999 ShurVend has built and offered different versions of multiple product vendors with security systems (as have other companies) to make high security vending centers more reliable, easier to operate, and aesthetically more pleasing.

The economic downturn of the past 2 years and the request from a large C-Store operation with a 100+ car wash operations forced us at ShurVend to really begin to think “outside the box”. Tradition always seemed to dictate that modifying existing vending systems should be the primary focus (Why re-invent the wheel) and then build the security system around the vendor. By thinking “outside the box” ShurVend decided to turn that tradition upside down; the primary focus should be the security system and the vending system would be second. The first incarnation of this new concept became the 10-selection vendor designed for the C-Store operation; the second version is the 10-selection vendor named “White Lightnin’ which was first shown to car wash operators at the recent Northeast show. A third version now being built is an 18-selction vendor which is designed for the smaller car wash sites or for installing multiple vendors in the vacuum area at the larger car wash sites. Now we have a vendor that is not a modification of any “off the shelf vendor”, but one that is designed specifically for the car wash industry that has “Guaranteed Delivery”, is weatherproof, has high security features, and can be installed anywhere on the wash site, but preferably in the vacuum area.

This new concept vendor is not only easier to build, but will sell at a very attractive price. It is a truly amazing evolution of this product line in only an 11 year span with most of it being done in the last 3-4 years.

We don't want any confusion between the 10-selection White Lightnin' vendor and the newer 18-selection vendor now being built. The 10-selection vendor uses smaller trays and different helixes than does the 18-selection vendor. The trays we are using in this new 18-selection vendor are the same trays we use in the Junior FL and RL in-the-wall vendor and the ShurVend "39" selection vendors which many of you have. We are trying to use the same parts in all of our vendors if we can.
